April 29, 2025 — The NBA officially admitted a key officiating error late in Game 4 between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Minnesota Timberwolves, further fueling controversy during this intense playoff series.
According to the NBA’s Last Two Minute Report, Lakers star Luka Dončić was clearly fouled by Timberwolves forward Jaden McDaniels in the final seconds of the game. With the Lakers trailing 114-113 and just over 30 seconds left on the clock, McDaniels tripped Dončić while he was driving to the basket — a foul that was not called by the referees on the court.
The Lakers ultimately fell to the Timberwolves, 116-113, leaving them down 3-1 in the best-of-seven series. Many, including Lakers head coach JJ Redick, voiced frustration with the officiating after the game.
“That was a blatant foul,” Redick said during the postgame press conference. “In a game this important, you expect better. Luka deserved those free throws.”
Dončić, who delivered a stellar 38-point performance, remained composed when addressing the media but hinted that the missed call was “frustrating” given the stakes.
This is not the first time this season the Lakers have found themselves on the wrong end of officiating mistakes. Previous Last Two Minute Reports have revealed missed calls impacting Lakers games, adding tension between the team and league officials.
The Lakers now return to Los Angeles for Game 5, facing elimination. They must not only overcome the Timberwolves’ tough defense but also shake off the frustration from Monday night’s controversial ending.
