Louisville, KY – May 2, 2025
As Churchill Downs buzzes with excitement ahead of the 151st Kentucky Derby, all eyes are on one question: Who can beat Journalism?
The sleek bay colt trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher has been the talk of the track since his dominant win in the Florida Derby. With a perfect 4-0 record this season and the fastest prep time of any 3-year-old in the field, Journalism enters Saturday’s “Run for the Roses” as the clear favorite.
The Making of a Contender
Bred by Calumet Farm, Journalism is the product of racing royalty — sired by Triple Crown winner Justify and out of a Tapit mare. His poise, explosive turn-of-foot, and tactical versatility have drawn comparisons to some of the sport’s all-time greats.
“He’s the real deal,” said jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., who will ride Journalism in the Derby. “He’s got speed, stamina, and a mind that doesn’t panic. That’s rare.”
The Challengers
But horse racing is never a sure bet, and Journalism won’t have it easy in a deep, talented field:
Revolution Trail – Trained by Brad Cox, this powerful closer made headlines with a thrilling win in the Arkansas Derby. If the pace is fast early, he could mow down the field late.
Silver Syndicate – The undefeated California colt has a lightning start and is expected to set the early fractions. Can he hold on down the stretch?
Blue Horizon – A European shipper with turf class and proven distance ability. The dirt might be a challenge, but the stamina is unquestioned.
Echo Vow – The wildcard. Lightly raced but impressive in workouts, this colt could surprise with a breakout performance.
Track Conditions & Strategy
Weather forecasts predict a fast track for Derby day, which should favor stalkers like Journalism. But the 20-horse field and unpredictable Derby traffic mean even the best horses can get boxed in.
“Anything can happen in the Derby,” said NBC analyst Randy Moss. “Journalism looks like a champion, but this race has humbled favorites before.”
A Race to Remember?
The 2025 Kentucky Derby promises not only high stakes but high drama. Journalism may be the headline, but the rest of the field is eager to write a different story.
